The twelve houses,
as areas of a life
The twelve houses divide the sky as seen from your exact birthplace at your exact birth time, and each one covers an area of life — self, resources, communication, home, creativity, health, partnership, and so on. Signs describe how a planet behaves; houses describe where it happens.
Where the houses come from
The houses are anchored to your horizon. The degree rising in the east at your birth becomes the start of the first house, and the rest follow around the circle. Because the horizon turns with the Earth, the houses shift completely over a day — which is why they need a recorded birth time and a place, not just a date.
Different house systems divide the space slightly differently. Kinastry uses a consistent system for every chart so that comparisons between family members stay honest.
The twelve, briefly
Read each house as a room. Whatever planet sits in it brings its appetite into that room.
- First — self, body, first impressions, the approach you lead with.
- Second — earning, belongings, self-worth, what you consider yours.
- Third — speech, siblings, neighbourhood, everyday learning.
- Fourth — home, family of origin, roots, what private life feels like.
- Fifth — play, creativity, romance, children, self-expression for its own sake.
- Sixth — work, routine, health, service, the daily maintenance of a life.
- Seventh — partnership, marriage, close contracts, the qualities you meet in others.
- Eighth — shared resources, intimacy, loss, inheritance, what transforms you.
- Ninth — belief, travel, higher study, the search for a bigger frame.
- Tenth — vocation, reputation, public standing, what you are known for.
- Eleventh — friendship, community, hopes, the groups you belong to.
- Twelfth — solitude, rest, the unconscious, what happens out of sight.
The four angles
Four house cusps carry extra weight: the Ascendant (first house), the Descendant (seventh), the Midheaven (tenth), and the Imum Coeli (fourth). A planet sitting within a degree or two of any of these is loud in a life, whatever else the chart says.
Empty houses
Most charts have several houses with no planets in them, because ten planets cannot fill twelve rooms. An empty house is not an empty life area. Read it through the sign on its cusp and through the planet that rules that sign, wherever that planet lives in the chart.
An empty seventh house with Taurus on the cusp and Venus in the tenth, for example, still has plenty to say about partnership — it just says it through work and public life.

- Yes. The houses rotate roughly one degree every four minutes, so an inaccurate birth time can move planets into neighbouring houses and change the rising sign entirely.

What a birth chart is
A birth chart — also called a natal chart — is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place a person was born. It records where the Sun, Moon, and planets stood, which sign was rising on the eastern horizon, and how the sky was divided into twelve houses from that spot on Earth.
The planets
In a birth chart, each planet describes a different function: a drive, an appetite, or a way of operating. The Sun and Moon are the luminaries, Mercury through Mars move quickly and shape daily personality, and Jupiter outward move slowly enough that their placements are partly generational.
When the birth time is unknown
Without an exact birth time you can still read most of a chart: the Sun and the outer planets are reliable, and Mercury, Venus, and Mars usually are too. What becomes unreliable is the rising sign, the houses, and sometimes the Moon — the three parts of the chart that depend on the hour.
